It seems that people are viewing more and more pornography from their smartphones and tablets. Pornhub has been collecting data once again, this time for its (completely safe-for-work) Pornhub 2014 year in review. And, once again, visits from Android devices beat out iOS.
First it was the shift from traditional print media to the World Wide Web and now the next shift in pornography viewing is going mobile with more people accessing this type of media on their smartphones and tablets. One of the largest providers on the web, Pornhub, has now given us a much more intriguing insight into how this is starting to shape up.
Operating system statistics
One of the most surprising figures to come out of the statistics from Pornhub is how close iOS is to Android when it comes to viewing porn on their smartphones. While it may seem like Android users are the most willing to watch porn on their smartphones, it doesn’t take into account the fact that Android has a much larger global market share than iOS. With Android coming in around 80% of the market share and iOS coming in between 12 and 15 percent, you can easily see that iOS users consume a ton more porn on their devices than their Android friends. Basically, for every Android user who visits Pornhub, there are three iOS users waiting in line behind him.
As you can see, Windows is still completely dominating the desktop usage, while Android, despite the larger user base, is only accounts for 10% more traffic over iOS.
Pornhub also notes that "Apple’s iOS still represents a significant 40.2% of overall Pornhub mobile viewers, and they too have some rather interesting search action going on. For instance, they are more into ‘lesbian’ type porn than their Android counterparts, but are a little less turned on by ‘cartoon’ type porn, which is more popular among Android users." (Always nice to gain some insight into the minds of our AndroidPIT readers...)
Traffic by device
For the first time, phones have now overtaken desktop computers in Pornhub views. Though it only manages this by 1%, it's nonetheless telling of the accessibility and indeed capabilities of modern smartphones. We have infinite access to a near-infinite amount of graphic sexual content, which the population is evidently acting upon (particularly in the US and UK.) I wonder if this is the reason for declining SAT scores...
As you can see in the chart, 2014 saw a 12% increase in smartphone Pornhub views from 2013, and a 20% increase in tablet views. Despite tablet sales "crashing" in recent times, it's nice to see current owners continuing to find more ways to use them!
You can check out the rest of the extremely revealing statistics here. Possibly the most startling statistic, for myself, is not the "11 views for every person on Earth", nor the "78.9 billion views" in 2014 alone that Pornhub amassed, but the fact that the most common word written in the comments by users is "love".
If you're interested in finding out some of the long-term effects of viewing hardcore pornography you can visit the Your Brain on Porn website. It's fascinating.
What do you think of these latest Android porn statistics? Do you think it's time that porn-related apps became available in the Play Store?
