Plague Inc.

Plague Inc. certainly has a dark theme. As the name suggests, your task is to infect the world with a deadly plague by usurping human medicines and controlling its spread. The gameplay involves trying to mutate the virus under constant time pressure as your opponent, the human race, searches for a cure. It’s a free-to-play title, and one of the most popular on Android. You’ve got no reason not to give this one a go, but beware, it will get under your skin.

XCOM: Enemy Within

It’s hard to look past Firaxis when it comes to turn-based strategy games. From the masters behind the Civilization series comes a strategy game like no other. Set in the future, you take control of a military headquarters after Earth has been invaded by aliens, managing every part of the Earth’s defense, from investing in new technologies, to engaging with UFO’s and managing teams on the ground, to investigating crash sites.
XCOM: Enemy Within ain’t cheap, but investing in that one-time purchase means you aren’t bombarded with in-app purchases and other ways to add value to the game later. This is a fully-fledged title with tons of replay value. 12.99 USD in the Play Store.

Great Big War Game

Great Big War Game is a turn-based war strategy game based in the modern era. With great graphics, extensive campaigns, and even the ability to play cross-platform multiplayer, it’s no wonder that this title has been a huge hit on the Play Store. It’s not free-to-play and it does feature in-app purchases, but even paying the 2.99 USD entry price will offer tens of hours of addictive gameplay.

Frozen Synapse

Frozen Synapse was an indie PC classic long-before it hit Android, and what a game it is. Set in the office blocks of corporations, Frozen Synapse sees you take control of a tactical assault team to take down another squad. Don’t let the minimalist cyberpunk art deter you, Frozen Synapse brings a whole new dimension to turn-based strategy by having both turns occur simultaneously, leading to lots of nervy encounters with lots of tactical depth and second-guessing. The multiplayer is some of the best you’ll find anywhere on any platform and it is intense. 2.99 USD at the Play Store.

Hearthstone Heroes of Warcraft

Hearthstone Heroes of Warcraft is a card battling game, but its turn-based nature and focus on tactical play rather than technique means it easily finds a spot on our best strategy games list. From Blizzard, the guys who brought you World of Warcraft, comes a card battle game set in the same world, which is very easy to learn, but will take a lifetime to master. Custom deck-building, PVP battles, card collecting, Hearthstone made it onto many game of the year lists thanks to its fantastic just-one-more-try gameplay and constant rewards. Free on the Play Store, prepare to lose some hours to this one.
