June 30, 2015 a dravasting day for internet

Friday, 20 February 2015

June 30
This extra second is called a leap second which will make the atomic clocks of the world pause for a single second.

This has been announced by The Paris Observatory which is the largest astronomical observatory in the world.
According to the scientists, Earth’s rotation is steadily slowing by around two-thousandths of a second per day due to which is a cause of generating leap second.
However, this leap second will not be that simple as it looks because the scientists are predicting that leap second can have rather disastrous effects on various internet systems.
While explaining the phenomenon, The Head of Time Services at the US Naval Observatory, Demetrios Matsakis has told that during the leap second, the computer clock shows 60 seconds instead of moving over to the next minute or shows the 59th second twice. Therefore, the computer sees a leap second as time going backward and registers it as a system error, and the CPU can overload.
Matsakis has said that it will not be a good idea to be on board a plane during the leap second on June 30 as GPS receivers can be interrupted by it, causing a difficulty for pilots.
He has also suggested that to avoid any trouble on June 30 of this year, simply shut down your computer system for an hour or two around the leap second.
